Under the title "Traditional knowledge: Generation, transmission and protection", the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues were held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from April 22nd – May 3rd 2019, with participation of the Assyrian Aid Society-Iraq, which is the seventh participation of the AASI since 2012, this year, its delegation consisted of  the President of the AASI, Mr. Ashur Sargon Eskrya, Mr. Fareed Yacoub, the linguist and specialist in the Syriac language the MP on the Rafidain list in the KRG in its second week the second week of the forum, who has contributed to the transfer of the importance of education in the native language of the indigenous peoples and the importance of language in preserving and transferring his experiences in the process of education in the Syriac language in northern Iraq from 1993 to the present day. Ms. Nada Benjamin of Canada, represented the AASI on the first week of the forum.

 

During the participation of our society, the President of the AASI, Ashur Eskrya, delivered three statements in the following items: Item 3 Follow-up to the recommendations of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues and the second statement on Item 4 Review the implementation of the six areas assigned to the Permanent Forum, After the speech, the vice of chair of the forum went to the delegation of our Society to have a meeting for the importance of what was presented in the statement about the future of our Chaldean Syriac Assyrian people in Iraq. The meeting stressed the necessity of communication in the future to discuss the possibility of the Permanent Forum in addressing the suffer of our people in Iraq, the third statement dealt with item 12 follow-up to the outcome document of the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples, while the main topics of the Forum included discussion of the following items;

Item 5: Discussion on the 2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages.

Item 9: Discussion on the theme of this session “Traditional knowledge: generation, transmission and protection”.

Item 14: Future work.

Item 11: Human rights, Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples and the Chair of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Item 3: Follow-up to the recommendations of the Permanent Forum.

Item 4: Implementation of the six areas that have been assigned to the Permanent Forum by a traitorous mandate in the light of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Item 12: Follow-up to the outcome document of the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples.

 

The AASI also submitted reports on the following items, item 5, Discussion on the International Year of Indigenous Languages, 2019, and item 9 Special theme of this session Discussion on traditional knowledge Production, transfer and protection, the last report was in item 11 on human rights, dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on The rights of indigenous peoples and the Chairman of the Expert Mechanism on Indigenous Issues.

 

During his participation in New York, the Delegation met with representatives of indigenous peoples and civil society organizations, as well as representatives of some countries participating in the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. The delegation met also the chair of the forum Ms. Ann Nuorgam, and Vice of Chair, Mr. Phoolman Chaudhary.
